Umbrella Academy Figures Arrive in May

Dark Horse has just announced a set of figures depicting the heroes from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s The Umbrella Academy.

The Umbrella Academy Book and Figure Set features a previously unused cover by Gabriel Bá for the special digest-sized hardcover. The included 4-inch figure depicts Vanya as The White Violin, poised to end the world in concert with The Conductor and his evil Orchestra Verdammten! It is scheduled for release in April 2009 at a suggested retail price of $24.99.

UmbrellaFigureSet The Umbrella Academy Figure Set features the six members of the Academy, sized to scale, with Spaceboy measuring a beastly 5-inches as the largest figure in the set, and The Boy stacking up at a small-but-substantial 2-inches. The Dark Horse Product Development team worked closely with Way and Bá, adding bold shadowing and strange angles to create uncanny likenesses that evoke the characters exactly as they appear in the comic. The final product is as unique and quirky as the story itself, encasing the six siblings in cylindrical 360-degree packaging that displays the team under an umbrella-shaped dome. See these superheroes in all of their splendor when they hit retail stores in May 2009, with a suggested price of $39.99.

“In my six years at Dark Horse, I have never experienced this much cooperation and inspired creativity on a project,” says Rebecca D’Madeiros, Senior Product Development Manager for Dark Horse Comics. “Gerard and Gabriel, the team here at Dark Horse, and the manufacturers have contributed a wealth of ideas for the figures and the unique packaging. It’s been great fun along the way. We are all proud of the outcome: a 6-piece figure set worth displaying on a revolving shelf with spotlights and soundtrack music!”

These look pretty awesome and I’ll bet that fans of the book will definitely be looking to pick these up on May.

Cheetah Girls: One World DVD Review

Ok, this is a hard one for me to do for one reason, I can not stand bad movies or movies that appear to be bad.  I went into this movie not loving it at all, but at the end I was surprised at how good it was and that I managed to watch it all the way through without laughing.

So, here goes my geek girl card..I LOVED THIS MOVIE.

I loved it because it made me smile at the sheer joy that these three girls had for acting their way through a really bad script and not looking like a bunch of idiots.  The music was good and the title song was cute and bouncy.  The color and flair that was the background of India was fun to watch.  I got though this movie and was happy that I stuck it out.

This movie is the third in a series of Cheetah Girls movies that were started by Disney to give Raven-Symone a music career—which as we all know is going ok.  Even with her not in this film, I still liked it a lot.

The stars of the movie are Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan and Kiely Williams, a group of mid-level talent that shines in this movie.  The girls will never be on par with the High School Musical/Camp Rock gang but they hold their own quite well.

The movie fits together as a string of musical numbers with a cute but over used plot.  A contest is being held to find out what girl will win a starring role in a Bollywood film.  The singing talents of the girls is strong and I can see why Disney is  keeping these girls on the payroll. They can entertain quite well.

The movie start off with the girls trying to find work as a singing group. They meet a guy who has them audition for what they think is a group gig. He hires them but does not tell them that they have to compete for the lead role.  At first, the girls are not willing to do the project but Chanel (Bailon) convinces the girls to go along to India and do the movie.

They are placed in a great hotel and wait for the movie to begin filming.  Meanwhile, Dorinda (Byran) and Aqua (Williams) are having guy trouble and each girl having a hard time dealing with their crushes. Chanel is considered the best singer, Dorinda the best dancer and Aqua the best actress. The girls make a pact the stay together and each will compete against each other, but in a friendly way.

They discover the dance teacher is a quiet girl and she has a major crush on the lead actor. She also secretly wants to be the movie lead. The girls band together and help the girl, Gita, get the role.

The movie plenty of great moments and the ending was a lot of fun.  I will not spoil it, but I was cheering a bit at the last song.

The movie is 88 minutes long and is the extended music version that rocks the house.  If you love sappy songs and cool dance moves, then this is Disney at its best.  I wish that at least one of the girls had gotten a chance to be in HSM because they are really talented singers and dancers.  The best thing is that they know how to make you smile.

The DVD comes with glitter stickers and fully loaded with music based extras.  The DVD has music video and a rock-a-long mode that made my heel tap and I was even singing along with the girls.

The worst part of the DVD are the outtakes. Oh my god! I did not need to see that many bloopers and joke reels.  It felt forced and not really needed.

The movie also has a cheetah mode that give you a alternate version of the movie.  It’s significantly different from the main movie and it gives you fun facts about the Cheetah Girls and their lives.

So if you like a good old song and dance movie, this is the DVD for you.  It’s fun and I say that you must see this movie just to make you smile if you are having a bad day. The costumes are amazing and the setting is very well done.  If I had to rate this film for it genre, this movie would be at least a 4 out of 5.  Cheetah Girls Rock.

Is Monica Rambeau the New Black Panther

MonicaRambeauBlackPanther Marvel has released a another female Black Panther image and this one features Monica Rambeau, sometimes known as Captain Marvel, Photon and most recently Pulsar.

This is an interesting choice and could make sense due to the Avengers connection. Having said that, I don’t think she’s the likely choice. She’s too powerful and that wouldn’t fit with the Black Panther style.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Little Mermaid: Return to the Sea DVD Review

When I was a teenager I fell in love with a movie that made me cry.  That movie was Disney’s The Little Mermaid that came out in 1989.  I loved this movie so much that I just about cried every time I saw the film. I still cry to this day.

Flounder and Sebastian are two of my favorite characters to ever grace the screen.  So, when I was given the chance to review The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea (Special Edition) I was a happy geek girl.  This was a nice movie that made me smile from the opening credits to the last minutes of film.

The movie starts off with Ariel’s daughter, Melody as a baby who is loved by all, but none more than her grandfather Triton.  The sea people and the land people are having a celebration for the happy baby’s birthday when Ursula’s evil sister Morgana ruins all the fun by attempting to kidnap little Melody.  Triton and Ariel save the baby from harm, but the damage is done. Ariel makes a hard decision and keeps the baby from the sea.

Fast forward 11 years and Melody is a young pre-teen with a love of the sea, but due to her mother’s wishes, she hides this from her.  Triton puts Sebastian in charge of watching Melody from a distance and it’s his job to protect her.

Melody thinks that she is strange for having such a strong love of the sea and other children think that the princess is very odd and a goof. Meanwhile Morgana plots to take Triton’s trident while hiding from the king in a icy cave that’s pure misery for her and her lackeys.

Morgana wants a chance to lure the princess away and turn her into a weapon to get the trident. She uses the young girl’s love of the sea to get to her.  Melody is turned into a mermaid and she’s determined to help her new friend.

Ariel and Eric discover that their daughter is missing and try in vain to find her. Ariel decides to become a mermaid again to save her child, while Eric takes a sailing ship to hunt for her on the high seas. The battle that follows is one of Disney’s best in years.

I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say it had me in tears.  I love that Disney can take a concept of a sequel and make it almost as good as the original movie.  This was a great movie. I loved it so much that I’ve watched it four times in the last week.

I will admit, I do have a few bones to pick with the movie.  The first are the songs. They are really badly done.  They try to hard to be cute and the tempo seems a bit off.  I know I can’t sing, but when I have to turn down the volume to get through the movie that tells me it’s bad.

The second thing I didn’t like were the extras on the DVD.  The games were a bit off for me, but I liked the concepts. The clues given for the games are very childish.  I tested this theory out on a 7-year-old and he said the the games were kind of slow and not cool. Who am I to argue with a kid?

There is a deleted song from the movie placed in the extras and I can say this was a good thing to do.  The song is grating and awful, with really bad singing and no timing. I hated this song.

The best extra was the wonderful cartoon from the 1940’s called Mer Babies.  I loved this so much. It has old school art and I can see that this was done with love.

The original voice of  Ariel was redone by Jodi Benson for the DVD story book and it was fun to watch.  The movie is 75-minutes long and I would recommend this as a present for any little girl.  It’s fun and happy.  So do yourself a favor and take a look at this DVD.
