Marvel Titles for June 25

Marvel has a great batch of titles on sale this Wednesday. On top of the Secret Invasion tie-ins listed earlier, here’s what I’m looking forward to on Wednesday, June 25:

Captain America #39 Cover CAPTAIN AMERICA # 39
The Story: Okay, what the heck is going on here? Is that two guys in Captain America outfits? Yeah, it is. More than that, we cannot say. The epic Death of Captain America continues in Part Three of "The Man Who Bought America" by the acclaimed team of Brubaker and Epting.
SRU Says: Too good to pass up. Brubaker’s run on Cap will go down as one of the best ever.

Fantastic Four #558 Cover FANTASTIC FOUR # 558
The Story: Who are the New Defenders, and why does their appearance on Earth foretell the eventual extinction of mankind? Who has liberated Doctor Doom from his incarceration awaiting trial, and why? And what’s up with Valeria? (Oh, and the Fantastic Four are in it too…)
SRU Says: Reaction’s to Hitch and Millar’s run has been mixed, but I think it’s great. Hitch’s art is great and Millar is whizzing through fresh ideas every issue. Interested to see how this connects with Wolverine and Marvel 1985.

HULK #4 - Red CoverHulk #4 - Green CoverHULK # 4
The Story: This is it. The one you’ve been SMASHING for. The Green Hulk RETURNS! It’s Green Hulk Vs. Red Hulk –but the real loser is the Planet Earth. There have been knock-down-dragger-outters in the Marvel Universe — but nothing like this! Plus, who gave the Watcher such good seats??? If you read ONE comic book this month, it’s gotta be HULK — or SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!
SRU Says: Red Hulk – Green Hulk? Who do you like. Loeb’s Marvel work has not been great (Ugg – Ultimated 3), but so far, this book has been fun. Not earth shattering or ground-breaking, but fun.

MARVEL 1985 #2 MARVEL 1985 # 2
The Story: “CLYDE WYNCHAM”
Marvel’s most deadly villains have a foothold in the real world—but who will believe the only person who knows the truth, when that person is a 13-year old kid named Toby who’s read way too many comic books? Fortunately, it seems that Toby has an ally—the Incredible Hulk! Can even the Hulk survive the most titanic throw-down with Juggernaut in comic book history? Find out in this epic clash of super hero action…and ponder—who is Clyde Wyncham?
SRU Says:
This could be my favorite book of the year. Issue #1 blew me away. Millar had me hooked by recreating the imagination and dreams I had as a kid.

Runaways #30 RUNAWAYS # 30
The Story: The jaw-dropping conclusion to Joss Whedon (ASTONISHING X-MEN, Buffy) and Michael Ryan’s (NEW X-MEN) time-traveling saga! A HUGE shakeup to the Runaways comes as the kids try and find a way out of 1907. But can they escape a super-powered war on the streets of New York?
SRU Says: Whedon ends his run on the book with this long overdue issue. I’ve honestly not kept up with it, but will check out the trade.

Ultimate Spider-Man #123 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN # 123
The Story: Venom returns in part 1 of “War of the Symbiotes”! When Spidey’s most fearsome foe strikes, it looks bad for the outmatched web-slinger, but Silver Sable and her Wild Pack may turn the tide! Have they come to save Spider-Man or is their motive something more sinister? Plus: this story adapts, expands and incorporates the hit Ultimate Spider-Man video game (which Brian Michael Bendis just happened to co-write) into Ultimate Spider-Man continuity! So be like Venom and return to ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN to find out why folks like Wizard are saying it’s “the best Spider-book on the stands right now.”
SRU Says: My favorite book every month, Ultimate Spider-Man begins its next big arc with the return of Venom – and yes, that’s exciting. Bendis has a great take on the character and I’m excited to see what happens.

OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE A TO Z VOL. 3 PREMIERE OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE A TO Z VOL. 3 PREMIERE
The Story: Continuing the most exciting and comprehensive Marvel Handbook ever assembled! This twelve-volume guide to the Marvel Universe features more than 100 huge entries in each tome! This issue - from Crimson Dynamo (Gennady Gavrilov) to the Elements of Doom! Spotlighting people (Crystal, Cyclops, Daredevil, Dazzler, Deadpool, three Deathloks, three Death’s Heads, Dr. Doom, Dr. Octopus, Dr. Strange, Domino, Dracula, Drax, Dust, Echo, Elektra), places (the Daily Bugle, District X), teams (the Defenders), species (Demons, Deviants), alternate realities (Days of Future Past, Earth-A, Earth X) items (the Darkhold) and more!
SRU Says: The next volume of the hardback handbook. This is long overdue and with updated entries, Marvel is doing this one right.
