It’s been almost 10 years since the Avengers roster has been shaken up like it was in New Avengers #1. It looks like that’s about to happen again when Marvel starts a new initiative in late 2014 or early 2015 with Avengers NOW! The press has been filled with news of a female Thor and Sam Wilson (the Falcon) taking over as the new Captain America. While both of those stories are great, the revelation of what will be a new team of Avengers is the most exciting.
I think what Jonathan Hickman is doing on the Avengers is the most exciting thing the Avengers have seen since 2005 (or earlier), the Avengers waters are getting a bit convoluted. Marvel is currently publishing Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers World, Might Avengers (which is quite underrated), Secret Avengers, Uncanny Avengers and Avengers Undercover. I think paring the line back down to 2 or 3 books maximum would be perfect.
It’s also interesting to note the lineup in this image. While the big three (Cap, Iron Man, Thor) have undergone changes, the secondary line has completely shifted compared to the current books. This new lineup is definitely playing the the Marvel movie universe. Upcoming Marvel films include Ant-Man and Dr. Strange, who just happen to be on the team. Similarly, Scarlet Witch looks to be back on the main team, just in time for her role in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The Winter Soldier, fresh off his starring role in the most recent Captain America movie takes a place on the team. The newest incarnation of the cyborg Deathlok (featured on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show) is right up front as well. Medusa and the flaming Inhuman are interesting additions, but if the rumor of Inhumans replacing mutants in the Marvel movies is true, it makes sense. Lastly we have Angela next to the Winter Soldier. I’m beginning to this this is the character Marvel doesn’t where to use. She’s been in the Guardians of the Galaxy, revealed as Thor’s sister and now the Avengers. Whatever the reason, Marvel is clearly looking to expand her popularity and placing her in the Avengers is a sure way to do that.
I won’t lie, Avengers has been one of the few books I’ve consistently read by Marvel since the ‘New Avengers’ relaunch in 2005 and this latest sweeping change will surely keep me reading for many issues to come.
