X-Men Vol. 3 and 4 Episode List Update

I’ve received a lot of comments and emails about the episode order for the upcoming X-Men Animated Volume 3 and 4 DVD sets from Buena Vista Home Entertainment.

Many fans are upset that the episodes are in broadcast order, rather than the order the episodes were written and produced. Although I can’t offer specific examples for these episodes, this type of practice is frowned upon for DVD releases. It leads to continuity errors like a character being discussed in one episode and yet they’ve not been introduced.

When broadcast, episodes are often aired out of production order. More often than not, this is simply related to animation or production delays. One episode may not be ready and a later episode that is ready is broadcast instead.

I asked my Buena Vista Home Entertainment rep to confirm the episode order and it was only a few minutes later I received the reply:

we actually got word that the episodes are being released in their original air date order per the fact sheet sent out.

While this isn’t the best of news, there are two ways to look at it.

One, be happy that we’re finally getting the series on DVD. It’s been a long time coming. Watch them in any order you want when you get them.

or

Two, don’t buy the sets. You’ll either have to satisfy yourself with overpriced, bad quality bootleg sets or watch them online at Marvel.com.

If I receive any more information about the episodes in these sets, I’ll pass it along to our readers.

  1. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE! “No Mutant Is an Island” is suposed to come RIGHT AFTER “The Phoenix Saga” and show how Cyclops/Scott Summers deals with the apparent loss of Jean Grey. The episode looses it’s impact when it is viewed out of order.

If they get released in that wrong order, that would be an insult to fans who have been waiting years for this show to get released properly. Especially the fans who have held off from buying bootlegs hoping just one day Buena Vista Hom Entertainment would release in the CORRECT ORDER!

I found some contact information for Buena Vista http://www.angelfire.com/tv/onceagain/bvhe.html

Maybe if enough of us write, something could be done about the incorrect episode order for Volumes 3 & 4.

  2. Of course, I would love if they put the episodes in their respectful order – but I’m just grateful to finally have this wonderful series on DVD. Some of my favorites shows have never made it to DVD, so I’m very thankful to Buena Vista for releasing this one. And even though there’s no extras, the art covers are beautiful and it’s the episodes we wanted in the end, no?

I’ve checked the listings for volumes 3 and 4 in the other thread, and I didn’t see any mention of the “No Mutant is an Island” episode. Can someone confirm if it will be on either Vol. 3 or 4? I liked that episode very much.
