Kyle XY Season 2 DVD Review
Let’s see, a DVD about a boy with no belly button? A DVD about a teenage boy trying to find his way in the world with wide-eyed innocence…I LOVED IT! OMG! I loved this so much I have already programmed the new season in my DVR and can not wait for Jan. 12th for the new season to begin.
This is a must watch show for many reasons. The best way I can describe it is a cross between Dawson’s Creek and Chuck. This was the most fun I have had in ages. I felt like a teenager again, watching the interaction between Kyle and his family/friends. I swear it was like watching 90210 again without the annoying Brenda/Dylan plotline that killed a great season.
The whole 2nd season of Kyle XY was a tour de force of heartfelt drama with a touch of Sci-Fi that was perfectly balanced with enough mystery to keep me and my husband on edge for the entire 23 episodes.
The season starts out with Kyle still trying to figure out exactly who he is, and maybe perhaps what he is, with the help of his "father" Adam Baylin. After a rocky start, Kyle begins to figure out how special he really is and is reunited with his adopted family , the Tragers.
The family is made up of his shrink mom, scientist dad and a pair of siblings that blend well with Kyle’s innocence. Kyle’s big sister is a surly cynic who has seen it all and does not believe in people being happy. His brother, Josh, is the high school slacker who decided to change his life when he falls in love for the first time. Mom and Dad are very supporting and give the kids a sense of well being without being sappy.
I really liked the interaction of the mom with Kyle and how he has a connection to her that brings out the best in Kyle at all times. The supporting cast is amazing and fun. The teen actors made me smile so much that I almost cried when something bad happened to them as the season went on. I teared up so hard at the last episode, as they all pitched in to help Kyle’s girlfriend get the high school gym ready for the prom. And I cried real tears at the end of the show when Kyle is forced to understand that he is indeed different and has to fight for someone that he loves.
Trust me on this show is really good stuff.
The cool Sci-Fi part of the show is that Kyle is a human being that’s been grown in a capsule instead of a womb. Albert Eistein was in his mother’s womb for 10 months and that could have lead to him being one of the smartest people that ever lived. So, what would happen if you had a person who had 16 years to grow in a womb? How smart would that person be? Answer: Kyle has almost near superhuman abilities. He can levitate, heal, calculate math as fast as a computer, cause electrical surges and dream into the past.
This makes him the target of a very evil company that wants to get a certain secret out of his head, no matter what the cost. The company has been in the business of creating beings like Kyle for at least 20 years and they have not always had the best luck in their mission. The resulting experiment gone wrong is Jessi, a teenage girl who is just like Kyle, only her programming is bad.
Jessi makes Kyle work hard to understand that he is special and that it’s his job to help save her from both herself and the company. The season ends with Kyle finally getting Jessi the support she needs and being reunited with her "mother" who is played by the wonderful Ally Sheedy. But, the best part of the whole Jessi storyline was that he saved her from certain death and humiliation at least twice and did not even once give up on her as a person.
The Season Two DVD is a great jumping on point for people who want to see a good show that does not depend on teen angst, sex and backstabbing. This show is currently on ABC Family and is as clean as you can get without being sappy. Yet it still tells some hard truths about life. The first season was more focused on the Sci-Fi element, but I expect the Third Season will really ramp it up a notch.
The actors are bright, funny and cute. The cast is as follows: Matt Dallas as Kyle Trager, Bruce Thomas as Stephen Trager, Marguerite MacIntyre as Nicole Trager, Jean-Luc Bilideau as Josh, April Matson as Lori, Chris Olivero as Declan, Kirsten Prout as Amanda and Jaimie Alexander as Jessi Hollander.
This DVD set runs 994 minutes long and has tons of extras to keep the watcher happy. The extras include a really cool segment on the science behind Kyle XY, a heart wrenching alternate ending to the Kyle and Jessi’s fight and very solid audio commentaries that give major spoilers/insights for each episode.
This is one of best DVD’s that I have seen in a long time, go out and get this one ASAP.
