Geek Girl #18 – Event Fatigue or Why I Need A Break

Please note that while I write this blog I have a nasty version of the flu and that  I might be a bit snarly at times.

I am sick and tired of big events.  I am done with the whole 52 leads in Countdown leads into Final Crisis that goes into Civil War that flows into Secret Invasion that lands into Dark Reign. I have gotten  multiple copies of various one-shots and crossovers that have very little meaning to the whole storyline, but I bought them in good faith and I have one thing to say. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

Ok, Lorrie is now slowly climbing down off the edge of the roof. I have had it with big events and I am not going to take it anymore.  So, sit back and relax as I rant about the idea and plotlines behind the so-called big events over the last few years. (This week is Marvel, next week DC.)

Avengers Disassembled: The team breaks up, Wanda goes nuts and the bank is broke. OMG! This was the beginning of the big events crisis. (yes, I said crisis!).  The storyline was good, but I felt as if the whole thing was just done as a big re-boot and I hated it.  This storyline tore apart the Avengers and gave us the New Avengers. It also laid the groundwork for Iron Man being the biggest idiot in history of the Marvel U.

House of M: Wanda goes even more crazy and says the famous words of “No more mutants.”  Magneto got sad and Spider-man got mad. Yawn! This book haunts me to this day as they are keep publishing this variations of this book. No more mutants! I get it ! Yikes! Let’s move on.

Civil War: If you are a super hero you must register!  Ok, I get it , all of  the capes have to work for the government.  Wait, Spider-man is a kid called Peter Parker. Iron Man is the devil. Captain America is  fighting for the wrong side.  Thor has been cloned and he loves you (OK, wrong event, moving along).  This event had tons of stuff wrong with it and it’s still not resolved.  Ugh! Not my cup of tea but I read every issue, hoping that the events would make sense in the end.

Secret Invasion: Ok, the Skrulls have been hiding on earth and are trying to take over. The major players have no idea who is or isn’t a Skrull. Iron Man once again shows how wrong he is on everything and Maria Hill realizes that she should have listened to Nick Fury.  This was a strange trip for me and while I loved the ending, all I have to say is the why would you put Norman Osborne in charge of the S.H.E.I.L.D.? Really? I need to read more indie books until they get their stuff together.  This was just bad and it’s about to get worst.

Dark Reign:  Norman Osborne has the keys to the kingdom and he wants all of the baddies to play house along with him.  My god, this is going to be a train wreck. What the H-E-double Hockey sticks!  This had better not lead into another big event.  My pocketbook cannot take it anymore. I admit, I am still buying the books because I am a geek.  This is the worst time to read comics and not be into the big events. All of the regular books are tied into big events.  This is not fair to the reader who only wants to read the current book and not tied to whole idea of a big event.

Here’s my idea concerning big events.  Take a look at the Sinestro Corps War. It was self-contained and it rocked.  It didn’t have multi crossovers and it told the story in two core books.  This is what all  big events should be. I have 83 crossovers for Civil war and 86 for World War Hulk.  Yes, you are reading the numbers correctly and it makes me mad.

Why are the big companies forcing all of these books onto us for not reason? Back in the day, Stan and Jack did it without all of the extra stuff and it rocked the house. If they could do it with style and grace, why can’t the current editors do it as well

Next week DC.  Have a great week.

Hey! I love comics and sci-fi. I am a geek, I stand proud behind all that is geekdom.
