New Justice League by James Robinson

I make no apologies about how much I love James Robinson’s writing. He re-ignited my love for the All-Star Squadron and Golden Age heroes with JSA and reinvented what could be done with non-Vertigo superhero comics  in Starman.

Imagine my surprise when it was announced at the Wizard Wolrd L.A. convention that Robinson would be writing a second series for DC (he’s slated to be the next writer on Superman). The new series? A second Justice League series titled Justice League (not to be confused with Justice League of America). I was also surprised by this quote:

“The book is about justice and seeking justice, rather than responding to emergencies, letting the problems come to them, and being almost entirely reactive.”

James Robinson – from Newsarama

That sounds a lot like Extreme Justice and any number of other series from the 90’s. However, this is James Robinson we’re talking about. He made Starman, the Shade and numerous other old heroes interesting. I’ll give him a free pass on the idea, knowing the execution will be amazing.

Still, the best piece of info came from the above Newsarama interview. He announced the full team roster, which includes: Hal Jordan-Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Ray Palmer (formerly The Atom), Supergirl, Batwoman (finally they’re using this character), Starman (Mikaal Tomas – blue skinned alien) and Congo Bill the Congorilla.

Who? What? Huh? Who’s that last one? Here’s a little info:

In Action Comics #228, Congo Bill meets a strange golden gorilla, much more intelligent than normal gorillas. Twenty issues later, Bill’s friend, the witch doctor Chief Kawolo, tells him that he can control the gorilla by way of a mysterious ring, which allows him to change minds with the gorilla. Shortly after Kawolo tells Congo Bill this, he dies. Bill is later trapped in a cave and uses the ring to switch minds with the gorilla. Bill decides to use new power to fight crime in the jungle.

How awesome is this series going to be? Dwayne McDuffie and Geoff Johns had better watch out, because there will soon be a love triangle for my DC team affection with Justice League of America, Justice Society of America and Justice League all in comic shops later this year.

Teaming up with his friend (who happened to have the perfect domain name) they revised the former Superheroes-R-Us site into what it is now.
