Geek Girl #8 – 25 Cent Bin Diving

I love comics, I love old comics and I really love a good 25 cent bin.  I love the idea of going though the bin and discovering something really cool or something really bad.

As a child I used to beg my grandfather to take me to the swap meets and such so that I could look for comic books. I eventually found some books in the local library and the local used book store would have something good once in a while.  The hunt for good comics at a fair price is often hard to find.  I do not use ebay or any other means of getting my back issues, instead I try to find my books in back issue bins at my local comic shop or at cons.

I’ve picked up a few good books and quite a few runs of books that I have never read and that makes me a happy girl.  This is a quick review of my haul from recent bin dive.

amethyst01 I started out going though about 8 long-boxes at the local comic shop, and I struck gold on the first box.  I got Love and Rockets #10, a decent 7 issues of Cage from 1992, an almost compete run of the very first comic book series I ever read, Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld.  I am missing issues 4-6—good stuff.

specialeducation The next box had nothing of note for me just a lot of the Thing and a whole bunch of Avengers and X-Men.  I did find in the next long-box a  few Milestone comics of note, Icon and the Blood Syndicate.  The next few boxes held the following: a foil cover SHI: Tomoe that I used to own and lost a while back, Dave Dwonch’s 1st issue of Special Education, Pretty Baby Machine #1, Jonah Hex (Vertigo), foil 3-D cover of Robin II by Chuck Dixon, four issues of Rom that my husband gushed about for about three hours (he also got me Starbuck coffee, yea!) and some Legion of Superheroes

galacticbounty The strange stuff was a book called Guns of the Dragon, a prestige format of Realworlds: Wonder Woman and lastly Jack Kirby’s Galactic Bounty Hunter’s #1 (Icon).

Next I went inside and interviewed Ryan Higgins from Comic Conspiracy about the 15th anniversary of the store and took some pictures for this  article. I asked Ryan what was the hardest thing about owning a shop in this era of hard times and got some real interesting answers.

Then Mark (husband) and I watched a few minutes of Iron Man and talked comics with a few people.  I love sale day at the LCS, you get to meet cool people and talk comics.  The best way to describe the feeling is that you are with your people and it feels nice.

The back of the store held sets of runs that Ryan had put together and was offering half off.  This is where I scored big time, WOOT!

LegendHawkman I got a nice 20 issue run of Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD for 10 bucks. Catwoman: One Year Later for $6.00, Richard Dragon issues 1-8 for $3.00, a prestige format Legend of the Hawkman 1-3 for $1.50, and two runs of Legion of the Super-Heroes for $10.00.

Like I said, I scored really big.

So that was my haul for the day, I spent a grand total of $40.42  and got loads of really good stuff. Bin diving is a good thing. I was a very happy girl and I should have gone back the next day, but I had to do the wife thing and actually not read comics. (I know what a shame, not read comics).

So here is the info for this really awesome sale, the store is located in Sunnyvale, CA and is owned by a cool owner who loves the books as much as I do.
