Geek Girl #7 – Podcasting 101

or my lame attempt to record a show.

Ok, I have a few podcasts that I am currently a part of on a weekly basis.  The biggest problem is not finding material or guests, but the actually recording of the shows.  I have my own show,  Comic Book Road Show and then I am partnered up with Dafixer for Podcasting after Dark.

I also have a few others podcasts that I am regularly on including Dafixer’s Hideout and Fanboard Fancast.  So three out of four of my regulaer gigs are recorded by somebody else. No problem right?  Big problem, when I record my own show I have a hard time getting it done.  Oh sure I can and have talked for hours about Batman and Spider-man, I can talk Crisis and Secert Invasion with the best of them all day long, but let me attempt to record my own show?  Well, that just almost to funny to describe, but I will try.

Step 1:  Find a topic.

Sounds easy right, no unless my husband decides to go past being a moderate comic geek, most comic are off limits.  The only comics that he wants to discuss are Nick Fury, Rom, Longshot, Superman, Daredevil and Powers.  That’s it, nothing else matters to the man at all.  Hey, you want to discuss Final Crisis?  Is Superman in it? Yes, ok….wait who else and how much do I have to read to get the story…a lot..ummm, no maybe next time. That’s the first step bartering back to back just to get a decent topic for the show.  It usually takes three days and a promise of baked goods to settle on a show idea.

Step 2:  Show notes.

I hate writing show notes for CBRS.  I just really hate to do it. Not because it’s hard work, but my husband wants to have every line and word written out and highlighted. DRAT! This can and does take hours to do. It always gets done.  I start with the name of the show and the topic of the day.  I then use my notes from wiki to print up information that we use during the show.  I write down info for how to contact me and my email address.  The last thing I do is add show notes to my forum and website. This then gets edited by my husband and he throws a fit over the amount of notes that he just asked me for only hours ago.  So we now have an agreement, two pages of notes and catch words to reminds us of important info during recording.

Step 3:  The sound check.

Me during sound check.  Sit down, plug in mike and headset, ready to go.

Husband during sound check:  Hey honey did you test the sound?  Where’s my mike?  I think that we need to buy a new one.  Why is it over there?  You just did that trick my into recording early, you know I hate to record early.  Hey, hey I’m testing in here…testing 1, testing 2, testing 3..are you sure these are turned on?  Can you hear me?  I can’t hear myself, how come you are so loud?  Fine, do the show without me…….ok let’s record the show after I will show you how to properly do a sound check.  (No, I am not mad at my husband this really does happen each and every time..what can I say, he’s  kinda cute).

Step 4: The  prep work

I get my water and soda ready, have my books handy and open audacity. I am ready to go, but I know that I can not record for another three to five hours.  Husband has to download something onto his computer.  Usually is it some so earth shattering that it has to be done right this minute or the borg will be at our doors. I smile and tell him with a straight face that he loves you and walk away.  An hour goes by and he decided to finally read the show notes and the books in question, he stops reading and then prooceeds to question the contents of the comic based off of his own unique geek knowledge  He then argues me down on many points and goes back to reading.  Two hours pass and he has to take a nap because podcasting in hard on a geek.  Wakes up and wants to eat dinner and watch the news before the show incase anything important is in the news.  Five hours later, it hey what is wrong with you we need to record, hurry up!

Step 5:  Recording the show.

I hit the record button and pray that we really can do the show this time around, besides it’s only midnight and I have been trying to record since 2:00 in the afternoon.

Hey! I love comics and sci-fi. I am a geek, I stand proud behind all that is geekdom.

  1. I love it, I am a radio talent coach and work with many announcers, podcasters, and Internet radio personalities concerning content presentation and preparation. There is a middle ground for what you and your husband concerning the podcast. He over prepares and you just try to have fun and enjoy. Both of you are correct. I am going to listen. If you two ever need an objective ear, just e-mail or call.

  2. Haha, I will never take CBRS for granted. I never realised everything Mark does ;-). Thanks for the excellent read and for turning me on to that fancast. It seems to be a welcome addition.
