Geek Girl #4 – Computers and Podcasts – UGH!

Computers are the bane of my entire existence. I have tried to be nice and open about technology but this last weekend it really did get the best of me.

I fought the good fight and only won a small amount.  It was an epic battle that left my laptop the victor and poor little me still smarting about the defeat.  The pain of realizing that you are in need of serious computer tech help is humbling.  So after a few days of reflection,  I say it,  the computer is acting funny and about to break down. I RUN—not walk—to  the nearest “geek” squad that is in my neighborhood.

It all started last Saturday night when I was just about to a start recording the latest episode of Podcasting after Dark, when my computer just up and died.

The screen went black and the normal humming sound that the fan makes went silent.  I had a computer death happen right in front of my eyes.  As I sat stunned at what had just happened, I realized this was not the first time.

This had happened to me a few weeks ago and I attributed it to a computer losing power due to me knocking the cord loose by accident.  Not the case at all.  Well after I spent many minutes crying because I had to podcast and that I would not be able to do the show, my husband jerry-rigged his computer to mine and ran a cord from the two so that I could record.  This was very awkward and not fun.  Problem solved right? No way!

The next morning I was given lecture from the husband on how I don’t delete anything from my computer and that I save way to many things that I don’t use.

First of all I’m a comic geek; therefore I am addicted to collecting!  I love to keep small bits of paper around that has tons of comic related info on them.  I keep everything that I can find that relates to comics.  So what not do the same with your computer?  My secret shame was brought the light that morning…….I had too many podcasts and had run out of hard drive space.

There I said it out loud; I had too many episodes of Raging Bullets and Comic Geek Speak on my Ipod.

In fact, I had 30 days worth of podcasts on my Ipod.  30 days! I listen to about 30 to 40 podcasts a week. And I have a collector mentality to save the shows once I have listened to them.  I had to sit down and delete and subscribe to all of my podcasts again this past Sunday morning.

Let me tell you that I did some weeding out of the good and the bad and I have listen to around 38 podcasts (Joke, I only have 30).  That is until I find something of interest and start subscribing again to many different podcasts.

I must admit that I had a hard time saying goodbye to a few of my fave podcast that I have listened to over and over again.  I will miss the heated discussion of Civil War and 52.  I am sad that I have lost the great 3 part RB 25th show on Watchmen. Or the great episodes of Just Another Fanboy with Steven and Karen dissing Paris Hilton and Britney Spears on how to act like young ladies and not like people who have lost their minds.  I mourn the loss of my Around Comics episodes and the great interviews that I listen to from Word Balloon.  I have lost a lot of joy, but I now have room for more.

I was stunned at what that did to the speed of my computer.  I now run like the wind and can open and close files with ease.

Boy, who knew that Internet Explorer could open up that fast? I have learned my lesson. Delete all files and MP3’s that I don’t need and only save what you need and want.  I have learned that hoarding my podcasts can only hurt me in the end so I have a new word that was added to my vocabulary this week it is called external hard drive.

Hey! I love comics and sci-fi. I am a geek, I stand proud behind all that is geekdom.

  1. Wow, you are making me miss all my podcasts too. And save for Raging Bullets, I also listen to those others. As you know from your forum, I shared similar losses. I still wonder if maybe I am missing shows from my recent purging o’ podcasts. And the collector in you has to wonder if the speed is a good trade off for all that comicy goodness, eh? Another great column as usual.
