Geek Girl #1 – Office Toys

Have you ever been at work, sitting at you desk minding your own business and somebody comes in to your office and says the following: “Wow, what a great collection of toys you have!” Yes! No! Well this happened to me last week and I have to say that I smiled and said thank you. Then as par the course, this person did not leave. Instead I got the usual banter back. “You know, if you went down to Universal Studios you could get a lot of these things real cheap. I mean you could get a whole lot of these here toys with out spending a lot of money.” Grrrrrrr….They are not toys!

They are part of a treasured collection of items that define who I am and what means the most to me as a geek. So, after a few more minutes of advice on how to store them, how to put them on ebay if I ever need to sell a couple and various other bits of infomation this person left my office. I waited a few minutes and then very quietly said one word out loud. Idiot!

Now let me say that I have a pretty cool office and that I take pride in my collection of geekdom that greets me each and every morning as I walk in to prepare for a day. Of what is usually a running race of chasing down incorrect paychecks and explaining to people that no you can not take a vacation day due to it being a good day for the fish to be biting. I work in a pressure cooker and it gets hot more than cold most of the time. So, as I reached into my desk and calmed myself by flipping the pages of the latest copy of previews I decided to share with you today the contents of my small world of geekdom.

I have been collecting these items for about seven years and each piece is loved like a new born babe. Ok, the babe costs me about sixty bucks a month in insurance but you get the picture. So here is the list of what I have in my geek filled, comic related office.

First I have on my desk an excellent version of the mystery van from Scooby Doo. It sits next to my stapler, as it is always in danger of being swiped first. Next I have the pencils in my pencil holder protected by a combat Gizmo (from Gremlins). He is cute, just don’t get him mad or wet. I have a mini-bust of J. Jonah Jamison lined up with a mini-bust of Riddick. On the far side of my desk is a Wizard of Oz, Wicked Witch of the West music box.

My wall calender is Star Trek–old school–this month is Bones collecting core samples. My dry erase board is filled with my Scooby Doo 2002 movie button, a few old con badges from Wondercon, a Daily Bugle press pass, two Star Wars limted edition litho cards and my CGS west coast membership badge. My board also supports the certs from my Yoda mini bust (clone war) and it rounded out with my spiderman movie trading card and a old civil war postcard telling us that Marvel has added fourteen more cross-overs book so that we can understand that Civil War is really better then sliced bread.

My printer that costs more then my home computer sports a few goodies. I have two original heli-clixes, Batman and Spider-Man. A lone Stormtrooper and the entire full set of classic PVP JLA sitting and hanging out at the back of the printer. To my left sitting on my file cabinet is filled with my best geekdom goodies. I have a living dead doll unopened, a Crow snowglobe, JLU John Stewart figure, the classic BeetleJuice with sitting on the sofa with the girl split into two halves. Posed in the back are my Yoda mini bust and a newly given gift of a Rob Zombie Draugla action figure that plays the song when the button is pressed.

Now on to the walls of the office. My office mate is an older lady and she loves Elvis and so do I. I have on her wall the following:

Note: all of the wall action fugures are Todd McFarlane products.

  1. Elvis: Jailhouse Rock
  2. Elvis: Blue Hawaii
  3. Elvis: 69 Comeback
  4. Elvis: Viva Las Vegas
  5. Elvis: Blue Suade Shoes

My wall has the following goodies, I start with the top part of the wall…it’s rock related.

  1. Metallica
  2. Jon Bon Jovi
  3. Ritchie Sambora
  4. Rob Zombie
  5. Eddie from Iron Maiden
  6. Angus Young in school boy outfit
  7. Alice Cooper’s Welcome to my nightmare
  8. Slash

Second half of wall is comic related. It good, trust me on this.

  1. Green Lanterns – Sinestro, Guy Gardner and Elseworlds Red Son Hal Jordan
  2. 2005 San Diego Comic Con exclusive Star Trek Mirror Mirror Uhura
  3. 2005 San Diego Comic Con exclusive 501st Stormtropper. I got that little beauty at the Star Wars fan breakfast. Cold eggs but even cooler toy.
  4. 52 Booster Gold with Skeets
  5. Stargate Daniel Jackson series one
  6. Marvel Legends Blade
  7. My pride and joy…….ASH from Army of Darkness. This item will be buried with me when I die. That is all I’m going to say.

So, as I close I feel better now. I have shared my geekdom to people who understand what’s it like to have non-comic book people touch, feel, pick up and breath on my stuff. Don’t touch, just look at them. They are not a result of me being a kid or trying to appear different from the rest of the world. They are my personal touch stones that keep me grounded and off of the evening news. BTW, if you like some of my stuff I might let you have one or better buy you your very own Booster Gold. Respect the geek by asking questions and not by insulting them and or worse act like you know about my world. You don’t. But I am willing to teach you and guide you if you want.

Besides, going on toy runs at Target alone is boring.

Hey! I love comics and sci-fi. I am a geek, I stand proud behind all that is geekdom.

  1. Wow, just wow! Not only is some of that very cool from the perspective of geekdom in general. But there looks to be some very rare and special mementos mixed in also.

One thing I hate is when my wife makes a comment about maybe her mother hearing about a fellow geek on TV who has so many thousands of dollars worth of collectibles and the like. It has never been about that for me, at all. It is about embracing what you love, maybe some people let that go. Maybe they replace it. I simply enjoy it. Nothing wrong with that.
