Final Crisis Cover Conundrum

Lying in the Gutters recently previewed the first full cover image from DC’s Final Crisis. The interesting thing is the cover clearly states “7 of 7″, but this is the image that was solicited for Issue #1. Is the series counting backwards like Countdown? I doubt it.

Since the DC Universe #0 one-shot is supposed to lead into the series, I’d expect that it will start with #1. More than likely DC decided to change images. Still, it’s an interesting thought. With a title like Final Crisis, it could easily be counting down to something. But they’ve done that gimmick (somewhat unsuccessfully) with Countdown.

Regardless, I really like the cover design. Very different from your usual cover designs. The overlay name and issue numbers is a nice touch. You could argue that it’s not very visible, but I’d counter that with the opinion that most everyone knows about Final Crisis and that retailers will be pushing the series. Kudos to DC for experimenting and deviating from the norm.
